BIFMA is a trade association that sets standards for engineering and materials in the commercial furniture industry. BIFMA is the standard of strength test for the North American market, as EN standard is in Europe. Furniture products that conform to relevant BIFMA standards have been tested to repeatable and verifiable criteria intended to simulate expected use in a commercial environment.

BIFMA X5.4 includes products with single or multiple seat units. Public and lounge seating may be ganged or otherwise connected. The tests are based body weight of 253 lbs. (approximately 115 kg).
