a sofa that brings out a playful side

In Natalia Swarz's Madrid living room, family life gathers around a soft lilac Connect Soft Modular Sofa. Her daughters climb across it, their friends join in during playdates and, on quieter evenings, Natalia and her husband Armando sink into it once the girls have gone to bed. Around it, Armando's paintings, books collected on travels and the everyday traces of two young children make up a home that feels composed, but never precious. After years of gravitating towards neutrals, Natalia wanted something different this time: more color, more curves and, as she puts it, "something fun."

As a creative director and the founder of Hotel Weekend and Museum of Mini, Natalia spends her working days with mood boards and carefully executed plans. Home is where she lets some of that go.

"There isn't a big plan, and it's always changing," she says. Paintings move, finds come home from travels and the girls' toys make their way into the living room as they grow. Natalia still likes a sense of calm and order, but she has grown comfortable with a home that shows the life happening inside it. Nowhere is that more visible than around the sofa.

After years with a straight, neutral sofa, Natalia and Armando chose one with more character: the Connect Soft Modular Sofa, combining two Module Js with Modules E and K. Rather than running in a straight line, the modules curve and angle across the room, with one piece in the middle coming to a soft point. The result feels playful in its shape as much as its color. It is upholstered in Maharam Mode 466337–058 Feather, a pale lilac that brings life into the room without overwhelming it, and sits easily beside a caramel velvet pouf and warm wooden floors. Because it is modular, it can adapt as the family does.

Its size matters just as much as its color. The family's home is rarely only theirs: friends come over, children arrive for playdates and Armando might spend two hours in the kitchen cooking lunch. The sofa was chosen with all of them in mind.

Your work is very considered and visually driven. Is your home approached in the same way?

When I work on a project, everything is planned and executed according to a mood board or an overall idea. At home, it's much more relaxed and lived-in. There isn't a big plan. The things we have are pieces we've collected or brought back from our travels, and it's always changing. Every month we move something around, or something new comes in.

Our girls are really part of our world, too. You'll find their toys and their things in the living room, and as they grow older, the house changes with them. The one thing I do bring home from work is that I really appreciate order. I want to be surrounded by things that make me feel calm rather than overwhelmed.

How do you keep that sense of calm in a home with two young children?

Storage helps a lot! We have the Stacked Storage System in the hallway by the entrance, and honestly, it has changed our lives. With kids come strollers, bikes, scooters, helmets and a thousand shoes, so we wanted a place for everything.

We created a system where everyone has their own little locker. The girls each have their own, and then there are others for bags, umbrellas and playground things. The girls know the system too, which really helps. When you come home, everything has a place, and that makes the rest of the house feel calmer.

Your previous sofa was very neutral. What made you want something different this time?

We said, "Let's do something fun." I still don't want the house to be overstimulating, because I need it to feel calm, but we're a family with two little kids. It needs to have some fun too. We really loved the curves of the Connect Soft Sofa and the modularity. We have the space in this living room, so we thought, finally, let's take advantage of it and choose something that takes up a little more room. We wanted plenty of space to sit, but in a sofa that still felt dynamic and different. And I love that we can change it.

“We're always moving things around, so if we want another configuration, we can easily do that.”

    And then you chose lilac.

We've been wanting more color in our lives over the past year. I love the lilac because it gives life to the room, but it doesn't become tiring. And it works so well with warmer colors. We have a square pouf in a caramel-colored velvet, for example, and I love the two together.

“I love the lilac because it gives life to the room, but it doesn't become tiring.”

What does the sofa mean to you, and what makes you feel you belong here?

During the week we're mostly in the kitchen, but the living room is where we spend our weekends. And once the girls are in bed, Armando and I watch a movie together. It's something we can do together, and it's nice.

For me, home is about being surrounded by things that make you feel good. They don't have to match everything, they just have to make you happy. We bring something back from every place we travel, even if it's a book, a frame or a little ceramic, and every time I see them, they bring back memories. And we're always thinking about people and about them being comfortable. We really open our home to our friends and family.

Your home seems designed around having other people in it. Has that always been important to you?

Yes. I think that comes from our Latin American background. Home is very important to us. We love a house that is full of people, full of life, food and drinks, so when we think about the space, we're always thinking about that. We need a big sofa. We need a bigger table. We're already four people in the family, and if another family comes over for a playdate, suddenly we're eight. Madrid has that feeling too. It's very sunny, very alive, and I think we've brought some of that into our space.
