A couple of years back, Odgaard set out to create a color system in a language of her own as an alternative to the Pantone color system—she calls it The Popsicle Index: “I wanted to create a range of hues that possess an immediate appeal to the senses and successfully relates to the body", she says.
ON COLORS MARGRETHE ODGAARD Colors and textiles are very important in my work. Choosing the right color combination can make a strong statement and reach people not only through the eyes, but also through the feelings that are generated.
Just as plywood is a structural material made of layers of wood glued together, a textile ply consists of several individual strands combined into one thread. The pattern and color combination of the rug has been designed by mixing different colored yarns in the ply.
A subtle finishing detail is the two tassels, separating the ends of the rug without being attached to its corners. Instead, they act as natural extensions of the side weaves. Activating the rug on in its given space, the tassels give visual entry points to the design while also referring to the history of traditional handwoven rugs.
